“Oh, it seems impossible to satisfy all the search engine’s needs”, you are thinking sometimes, while you are trying harder and harder to create a perfect SEO for your posts.
Well, SEO is a science. You can’t skip studying it before having the expectations of achieving satisfactory goals. Because this would look like this: “I want an A on the exam, but I am not in the mood to study today”.
So, let’s begin the process of studying for this exam, step by step, together. The sooner you begin to deepen the subjects, the faster you will achieve success.
To learn about what search engines are truly looking for, you should know first of all, how a search engine is functioning, right? Ok, then let’s begin with it.
How does a search engine work?
Even though Google – the most popular search engine – seems that the last period has made the ranking algorithm difficult. There are just 3 basic steps it follows before deciding how important is your webpage’s information for being positioned in the top place.
- “Crawling” the web pages. Maybe this term sounds unsuitable when we are talking about search engines. But it is just about a very quick robot, which is gathering all the data about websites and transferring it to search engine indexes. When I say “gathering the data” I am referring to: web page titles, keywords, images, and maybe - one of the most important – the other web pages your site is linked to.
This robot can read a few hundred pages per second – claims Google, but despite this, “crawling” is the stage where the process begins and the truth is – this process never ends, it always works, leading to the second stage called:
- Indexing is the step where the search engine takes all the gathered data from the “crawling” and arranges it in a huge database. If you imagine this like a bookstore, try to see it bigger. See it like an enormous library with huge drivers of information, and this is “the smallest picture” our limited imagination can see. In other words, search engine indexing refers to the process of collecting and storing data for use in appearing in the further results page. This step makes the process of searching easier and more planned. This is how you find what you need in the final step:
- Ranking – the easiest, seems to be, but the most relevant, and I think, I am not mistaking, saying – the most important – for a user.
Before deciding how relevant a page may be for your inquiry, the ranking algorithm of the search engine needs to check between billions of pages, so you can understand now how complex this operation is. It became more complex over the years with the temptation of “hacking” this algorithm from those who discovered the ranking factors and exploited them for their benefit. Namely, this is the reason why Google made this step difficult last period. Now it’s not enough to use a particular keyword more times. Now, the more popular the websites linked to yours are, the more chances you have to rank higher in a search engine. And that’s fair enough, don’t you think?
To summarize, all that a search engine does is make order out of the chaos of information on the Internet. That’s how we end up finding what we need, without thinking about the long process that information passes through to be in the place it is.
“Ok, what’s next?” you will ask me. And it doesn’t take a long time for me to think. Obviously:
This is where SEO is introducing itself
As you already know, SEO is the process of search engine optimization which includes, in turn, a series of processes, aimed at making the online pages more attractive to search engines, trying to convince them that the webpage you own is worth being in the top.
I think you already understand that you can’t survive in the virtual environment without having some strategies.
SEO, if you want, is the simplest way of ensuring your website that it can have a top place in search engines, because of the relevant words and phrases it contains, but also because of its “suitable linkability” with other online projects. You don’t need to complicate yourself more! If you will know this and put it into practice, I assure you – everything will be alright.
SEO’s rules are simple if you want to keep them this way.
- Create content for human beings, not for robots. Take into account what people need to know, talking to them and asking directly.
- Think like a human being, not like a robot. If you were your web page visitor, what would you like to see on that page? What would you like it to be like? And now ask the same questions your web page users, your answers can match, but they can also not match, so try, as hard as you can, to “walk in your website’s visitors’ shoes”.
- Always create a call to action for each of your pages from the website. Only in this way will you understand what is truly working and what is not.
So, what are search engines truly looking for?
The answer is simple: a great web page, with suitable content and suitable links that make the navigation on it.
But don’t forget: fresh content is more than essential in search engine optimization. You should be active if you want to succeed in the virtual market.
It doesn’t matter what is your purpose in owning an online project, it doesn’t matter how long have you been in the virtual world, because all that matters is how are you dealing with your web page’s SEO, how you are handling your public and what are you offering people, who visit your website, to convince them to come back.
And now, taking a look at your web page, if you were a search engine, would you find it attractive?
